Helping to Save the Planet
There are a number of initiatives that we, in The Digital Office, are supporting to improve our environment.
Working alone companies and individuals find it difficult to make an impact and so that is why at TDO we amalgamate all our clients’ service volumes and also with Ricoh’s support, make a difference in the UN’s pledge to plan more trees, the oxygen giving band aid kit of our world.
Every month we receive notification of the number of prints each of our customers has made, using this total, we are committed to planting 1 tree for every 100,000 copies made.
Each month, we will update the counter below to indicate how many trees our customers have planted.
Prints 101,234,950 = 1,000 trees planted to date
WeeeReeco Directive
New regulations have been introduced to tackle the growing amount of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). It is one of the fastest growing waste streams in Europe, and in the UK alone, we throw away around 2 million tonnes of WEEE every year, much of which ends up in landfill. The regulations aim to ensure that more WEEE is separately collected for treatment and recovery, and less goes to landfill.
The regulations apply to all companies who import, manufacture, or re-brand electrical equipment in the UK; these companies are known as "producers". They also affect everyone who uses, sells, treats or disposes of WEEE.
They affect the way WEEE is disposed of by setting treatment standards and recycling targets and, importantly, by making producers, rather than end-users, pay for its treatment and recycling in most cases.

Ricoh Remanufacturing Plant
The Telford factory in the UK is the only major hub for remanufacturing machines and is the only manufacturer in the UK to do so.

It is clear from the very philosophy that runs throughout the entire Ricoh Group that resource conservation and recycling constitute one of the pillars of our environmental conservation activities. As such, we have been recycling our products, such as copiers and laser printers, since the early 1990s.
Europe alone collects over 120,000 used products each year, many of which are refurbished at one of our key European refurbishment centres. In order to continuously promote recycling, it is necessary to create economic value from the process. As such, any machines collected must eventually return to the market, but only once they have met our high quality standards.
Having addressed the issues surrounding the recovery of older models and varying levels of functionality, we can now offer a wide variety of refurbished machines, all of which meet our high production levels and fulfill your Weee directive targets and audits as well as being cheaper than new machines.
Recycling Scheme
The print consumable scheme is straight forward and user-friendly:
- Companies that sign up to scheme receive specially designed toner collection bags and cable ties. On average, the bags hold approximately twenty four units
- The scheme is also able to recycle the cardboard packaging which can be included in the bags
- Once full, participants call the dedicated freephone number or email to arrange collection (usually within 24 hours to most UK locations).
- eRECO will provide duty of care waste transfer notes at this stage that can be used in environmental audits
- In receipt of the bags, eRECO asset tracks the contents of each bag and begins the recycling process. Participants receive a full asset report which provides details such as the model types collected and total consignment weights. These reports can help with achieving and maintaining ISO14001: 2004 accreditation or EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) approval
